Juvenile polyposis coli.

چکیده
The term 'polyposis coli' applies to a condition of multiple polyps of the large intestine and is used synonymously with 'familial polyposis' and 'multiple adenomatosis'. The latter name emphasizes the fact that the individual polyps of this disease in no way differ from adenomas observed as solitary lesions. The object of this paper is to describe the histopathology, clinical features, and family histories of ii patients with polyposis in whom the polyps were not adenomas but had the structure of juvenile polyps. The latter are often confused with adenomas despite clear differences in pathology and behaviour. Juvenile polyps, like adenomas, are usually present as solitary lesions, but just as adenomatous polyps may be present in large numbers (adenomatous polyposis coli), so the large intestinal mucosa may be covered with multiple polyps of the juvenile variety, henceforward called 'juvenile polyposis coli'. Large intestinal polyposis has been described in children by Kerr (I948), Gordon, Hallenbeck, Dockerty, Kennedy, and Jackman(I957), and Hines, Hanley, Ray, and Rush (I959), but these authors, wrongly in our opinion, referred to the polyps as 'adenomas'. Castro (1955), MalIam and Thomson (I959), and Knox, Miller, Begg, and Zintel (I960) also reported cases of colonic polyposis in children, but did not describe any investigation of the family histories of their patients. A summary of the clinical features and pathology of our cases has been published elsewhere (McColl, Bussey, Veale, and Morson, I964).

Juvenile polyposis coli.
A FEW decades ago intestinal polyposis was regarded as a single entity, but increasing knowledge has led to the identification of a number of different syndromes. The term polyposis coli is usually taken to mean familial adenomatosis coli, a premalignant condition occurring in adolescents and adults. Although there have been many reports of colonic polyposis in children, discussions on the subj...
متن کاملFamilial juvenile polyposis coli; increased risk of colorectal cancer.
Six patients from one family and one solitary patient with juvenile polyposis coli are described. The histological changes in colonic polyps formed a spectrum from juvenile polyps, through focal to extensive adenomatous change, to adenocarcinomas. One patient aged 49 years had an adenocarcinoma of the colon and in another, aged 33, with rectal polyps and metastatic cancer this was suspected alt...
متن کاملHuge Juvenile Polyps of the Stomach: A Case Report
Watanabe et al. [3] first reported a case of juvenile polyposis of the stomach in 1979. Since after, it was proposed as the fourth category of juvenile polyposis [4]. Juvenile polyposis of the stomach is, however, difficult to diagnose because of rare phenotype and difficulty of differential diagnosis between juvenile polyp and foveolar hyperplastic polyp histologically by biopsy specimens. We ...

AIM Report of a series of 12 cases of juvenile polyposis coli. METHODS The study period was from 1995 to 2005. All the patients were treated by total colectomy with rectal mucosectomy and endorectal ileoanal pullthrough with or without ileal pouch formation. Covering ileostomy was avoided in all the cases. Time taken for the surgery, postoperative complications and continence were documented....
متن کاملColorectal neoplasia in juvenile polyposis or juvenile polyps.
Juvenile (retention) polyps are usually solitary lesions in the colorectum but may be multiple in juvenile polyposis. The association between juvenile polyps and colorectal neoplasia is controversial. We present three patients with juvenile polyposis who had colorectal adenomas or adenomatous epithelium in juvenile polyps at ages 3, 4, and 7 years. In a retrospective study of 57 additional pati...
